College officially launches new commercial salon and spa

Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) has officially launched its brand new commercial Transform Salon and Spa.

More than 100 Staffordshire hair and beauty industry professionals turned out at the new Knutton Lane campus for the 80s themed launch event, which was held on Monday 17 May 2010.

A grand total of £544.42 was raised for the Blurton-based Douglas Macmillan Hospice through ticket sales and donations on the night.

The new Transform Salon and Spa is part of the College’s new £60 million campus, which opened in January 2010. It features purpose-built, state-of-the-art salons where students can gain hands-on practical experience in hairdressing, beauty and holistic therapies.

Curriculum Manager for Hair, Beauty and Holistic Therapies Jane Brentnall said: “We now have one of the best teaching and learning environments in the country with salons that are better than those you’d find on most high streets.

“With talented and motivated students, a professional and creative staff team and the support of our industry partners, I’m confident that our new Salon and Spa will be a resounding success.”

The highlight of the evening was a hair, beauty and fashion show, called ‘NU Wave’, which featured hair designs by current and former students of the College using industry-leading AFFINAGE salon professional products.

Ann Moon, AFFINAGE Area Account Manager UK, said of the new facilities: “I’m hugely impressed by the professional standard of the new salons, which must rank among the best in the country.”

The models outfits were styled by Andrea Sawyer-Hartley, Personal Shopper at Debenhams’ Hanley store, with assistance from the College‘s fashion students. The event was also supported by Natalie at Elizabeth’s Florists.

Prior to the show guests, including De Barry Blanchard, Worthy Master of the Guild of Hairdressers, enjoyed a selection of 80s themed canapés and a Bucks Fizz reception while touring the new salons.

Meanwhile internationally-acclaimed aromatherapy and skincare guru Eve Taylor OBE, founder of Eve Taylor™ Professional Aromatherapy Skin and Body Care, was on hand to offer free one-to-one skincare consultations.

Eve Taylor OBE commented: “Any student should be proud to work and study here. The equipment and facilities are fantastic and will help train the industry professionals of tomorrow.”
